Geology Tour

Longer Version 23+ miles, Shorter Version 10+ miles; Join Dr. Kevin Urbanczyk and local guides for an educational Tour.

[Per Dr. Urbanczyk} The Geology tour will start at the west Contrabando trailhead (6.5 miles WEST by road from Lajitas).  The ride will first follow the Fresno divide trail for about 3.5 miles. Here, the trail gradually gains elevation on a Quaternary alluvial deposit.  The trail then ascends onto a second Quaternary surface as it continues north and then crosses a fault and continues on the eroded remnants of the Wax Factory laccolith.  The laccolith was emplaced as magma into limestone (Cretaceous Boquillas Formation) approximately 27 million years ago.  We will reach the high point of the trail after 3.5 miles.  From there, we can see the Solitario, Chimney rock, the Bofecillos mountains, Lajitas Mesa, Contrabando dome and the Terlingua monocline.  All will be discussed and then we will proceed down to the Dome trail and then turn right onto the Dome single track.  We will proceed south across the Contrabando dome and reach the Water Hole at approximately 6.5 miles.

At this point the tour will split.
The Shorter Version of the tour will return to the trailhead along the West Main Trail (about 4 miles from the Water Hole making the short version a total of 10.5 miles).
The Longer Version will ride north to Buena Suerta and the proceed up the Government road section of the Rincon loop trail to the Chimney rock cutoff trail and then return to the West Trailhead for an estimated total ride length of 23.5 miles.
